An Anniversary, A Thank You, A Quote, and A Farewell

RainbowCakeHappy Monday, my friends!

Last week flew by in a blur.  Trying to fan the flames of that new creative spark I’m cultivating, I made a rainbow cake (avert your eyes from the Grand Canyon sized crack that happened during delivery) for a friend.

I then did a bunch more baking, worked on a screenplay, watched Stranger Things*, and finally ended the week going to see Suicide Squad* – mostly all positive things.  *To be discussed later.

Happy-AnniversaryAmidst all this was the third anniversary of my blog.

I can’t believe I’ve been at this for three years already…I may slack off from time to time, but this has been the most devoted to a “diary” I’ve ever been, and that has a whole lot to do with all of you.

So Thank You !

You all hold me accountable, and make me want to show up.  Like when I’m away from my own writing for too long, I feel guilty.  I’ll keep trying to do better!

Now, as it’s Monday, we need to start this week off right.  In light of the so many negative things out in the world right now, as writers and creatives we’re lucky that we have our minds to escape into.

ImaginationVsReality

Find your happy place and do great things!

WillyWonka

And finally, a farewell.

As I was looking for the image of the cake, I learned of the passing of Gene Wilder, an icon who had a huge impact on my youth.  I don’t often comment on the passing of celebrities, that’s not what this space was intended for, but because there are some people who have been a part of our lives (for as long as we can remember), whether we knew them personally or not, we feel compelled to take a moment and thank them for their contribution.

From Willy Wonka to Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein to Silver Streak, The Producers to Haunted Honeymoon and so many more, he always stole the show and we were lucky to have him.  His is an enduring legacy, and I know my generation is grateful.  RIP.

Quote Monday

In light of my last post, I’m having to give myself daily pep talks in order to keep moving forward.  It’s a struggle all creatives must endure, and if you’re like me at the moment, know that you aren’t alone.

GentleReminder

We can do this!  We can overcome our fears and achieve what we want in life, we just have to be brave!

Wishing you all the very best!

Quote Monday

Hi everyone!  I’m back after a crazy week of Gishwhes, and a week of recovery.

I like to do a recap of the week’s events, and as you may have noticed the odd post about Miss Jean Louis, an item for this year’s hunt, it tends to get a bit weird and challenging. Because my memory is so fragmented, this blog has become a resource for me to keep track of things, so I’ll share Team Falkor’s antics later this week.

As for today, it’s time to get back to routine and progress!

CreativityIsContagious

In light of the creativity that abounds during Gish week, and the post I wrote just a few days before it started about how I was feeling burnt out, I am now seeking out alternative means for creativity.  I’m looking to surround myself with people who are passionate and creative, because the above quote is true.

I have found myself inspired by other’s creativity, and I think that is a wonderful side effect to the creative life.  So let’s be a creative force and make beautiful things!

Quote Monday

On my days off, I had planned to write a couple of blog posts, but instead I did some cleaning, I applied for yet more jobs, started a rewrite, and did lots of reading.  Lots and lots of reading.

It was nice to give over half a day to the enjoyment of a good book.  I haven’t done that in a while.  So my apologies for a lack of interesting things this past week.  I’ll do my best to make up for it!

I saw this quote and felt it was apropos, and yet, I do not regret my time invested in reading.  It’s really research for a writer. 😉  I do sometimes find myself wasting time and energy on things I know I shouldn’t, so this is a helpful reminder:

Have a great week everyone!  Keep striving towards those goals!

Quote Monday

When I started this blog, I wanted to have a clear focus as to what I wanted it to be.  I wanted to share my journey towards becoming a professional writer, I wanted to help other writers find inspiration and useful advice, and I wanted to share a few of the things I get excited about…you know, my geek side.

I did not want this to be a platform to share political, societal, or religious ideology.  I may be frustrated at the state of things, but I always want this to be a place for creatives to escape to, so to speak, a place of positivity and encouragement for the creative path we have been called to follow.

As writers, we hold a great deal of power, and it is with that voice we can do great things!  Use them wisely. 😉

*It is in light of everything, events in my own life and those surrounding us (and in spite of my earlier comments), that this rang true:

Persevere

I wish you all the very best in both your “real” life and creative one.

*Updated multiple times because, despite being a writer, I could not find the right words to express my feelings correctly…

Quote of the Week

I’ve been told to lower my expectations.  They are generally fairly high.

I’ve surprised people with my vocabulary, because a person in the food service industry can’t be educated?

I’ve been playing video games since they were practically invented, and yet I still get sideways glances when I say I’m a gamer, because, you know, girls don’t play video games.  Okay.

We are all a mixture of contradictions and we should be proud of who we are.  Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise or stand in the way of your dreams.

Don'tDumbYourselfDown

This quote can also be used in regards to our writing.  Write the story you want to tell and there will be people out there that get it and admire you for putting it out into the world.

Wishing you the very best in all your endeavors!

Did You Miss Me?

Hi everyone!

What a couple of weeks we’ve had, right?!  Goodness.  I hope you’re all well and working harder towards your goals than ever in light of recent events.  Yet more reminders of how fragile life is and how unexpectedly things can change in the blink of an eye.

With that in mind, I’d like to kick off this week in my traditional way – with a quote.

There’s no reason not to follow your heart towards the goal you desire most.  Whatever it is, go after it!  Ignore the naysayers, and do what makes you happy.  Make the time.  Put in the effort.  Push yourself.  Dream big!

Quote Monday

My mother has been visiting this week so my normal schedule is a little off, hence the lack of posts.  I’ll try to be better this week because I have lots to share.

Starting with this – a quote by Arthur Ashe:

ArthurAsheQuote

I was reminded of this idea recently.  Sometimes we wait for the perfect moment, the right conditions, more money, what-have-you, and the truth is, those are just excuses as to why we wait.

Carpe diem!  And best wishes!

Quote Monday

Today’s post is not so much a quote as it is a mantra.

I’ve been struggling, no, that’s not the right word (and I’m lying to myself).  I’ve been reluctant (yeah, that’s more like it) to cut a few scenes in my pilot because I like them, and I worked them and schmoozed them to get them just right, but I know they need to go.  I’ve just been dragging my heels and acting like a five year old with their fingers in their ears saying, “No no no!  You can’t make me do it!”

I needed today’s reminder that to in order to create a great story, we have to be brave enough to kill our darlings.

Say it with me:
