Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works. – Virginia Woolf

Discrepant Writer Reviews – Death Comes to Pemberley
Death Comes to Pemberley recently popped up on Netflix, and as a Jane Austen enthusiast, I was excited to see they had picked it up. I had been seeing articles, set photos, etc. for some months, so I made the effort to watch it almost immediately. If you are wondering why I hadn’t watched it sooner, it’s because we haven’t paid for television in over 3 years. So yes, I’m fairly out of the loop on most things.
Based on the novel of the same name from 2011 by P.D. James, I have to say I have been less inclined to read any of what is basically fan fiction of one of the most famous love stories in all of literature. This is not a judgement in any regard. I love fan fiction, I write some myself, but what I have discovered in some of the reading I have done is that it lacks the…hmm, what’s a good word…magic?
Jane Austen ran in the circles she was writing about. Modern day writers can only emulate what they’ve studied, read, and seen because we have not lived it first hand, and again, by no mean is this a shortcoming. I love period pieces, and if we only wrote about what we “know”, we wouldn’t have the wide range of diversity we do in any medium. As writers, we each have a voice, and when it comes to something as widely beloved as Pride and Prejudice, you have to get it just right.
The film was broken up into three parts. I’m pretty sure it could’ve been told in two. Anna Maxwell Martin and Matthew Rhys play our leads, Mr. and Mrs. Darcy in their sixth year of marriage planning their annual ball when tragedy strikes. A murder. Because of the people involved, a wedge is slowly driven between the couple and we are given a glimpse as to the repercussions of following one’s heart instead of one’s head – or at least in the minds of these characters.
The actors are both very good, but I felt Elizabeth was cast incorrectly. She was not the same spirited woman I have come to love and this is where I blame the writing. She seemed weak, and that spark that had attracted Darcy to her in the first place was replaced by insecurity and she was kind of dull. Darcy was too distant, even from the beginning of the film, and because so little is really known of him from the original material beyond those honorable traits we know and love, he too came off a bit dull.
Now, I haven’t been married, so maybe after six years of marriage in this world, they’re a little bored of each other, but when we leave them at the end of Pride and Prejudice, it’s not that I expect the permanent happily ever after, because it is based in “reality”, but I expect more than this. Of course there will be hard times, etc., but I also expect that the challenge they presented to one another would carry over. They should have spirited debates, and still have some spark…well, I think so anyway, and that was missing entirely from this tale.
I didn’t feel/see any spark between these characters, and I almost felt like the obligatory “romantic”, oh, let’s call it what it was, the sex scene was meant to reassure us that they did indeed have “something”, but that doesn’t happen in Jane Austen’s stories, so I know it was meant specifically for modern day audiences, and for me it felt out of place.
There’s an odd side story involving Wickham, played by Matthew Goode, and that does have some bearing on the story overall, but in the vein of a mystery, it was still rather convoluted. The other failing was the absence of Jane and Bingley, the two people dearest to our main characters. I think there were two scenes with Jane, and they didn’t amount to much.
I love the idea of seeing more of two of my favorite characters, as I’m sure does every Janeite, but I would almost prefer to imagine their fates as an open-ended tale without any real knowledge of what happened. Looking back on what I’ve written, it doesn’t sound that promising of a film, but it had its moments, and I was glad to have the opportunity to watch it. If I were flipping channels and it was on, I’d most likely leave it for a bit, but it’s lack of overall charm doesn’t compel me to go out of my way to watch it again.
Well, that’s my take anyway.
Happy Sunday!

The Best of Quote Mondays
I was scrolling through my image gallery and saw all these wonderful quotes I’ve posted and thought it might be time to do a sort of “best of”.
Looking back, I have found that my quotes were meant to boost my own morale as I have struggled with unemployment, keeping motivated, staying focused, and achieving my goals, but because these are topics I’m sure, we, as creatives have all struggled with, I hope you have found them useful as well. These are among some of my favorites.
I wish for each of us to reach the level of success we desire and I hope you will continue to find the quotes inspirational and a boost to your own morale. Keep reaching for those goals, make new ones, and make a little progress everyday!
Wishing you all the best, my friends! Happy Writing!
Writing Prompt #45
It’s Quote Monday
I remember when I started telling people I wanted to be a screenwriter the reactions I often received. I received a lot of scoffs and naysaying and “words of wisdom” that I should choose a more practical career path. This is something that has always bothered me, and it used to gnaw on me a little, actually it still kind of does when I think on it. Why would you ever demean someone’s dream? Why would you think to say it can’t be done, especially when you don’t know what the person is capable of?
This is why I try to be so positive and encouraging in this space. Maybe you’ve received those comments and don’t have a lot of people in your corner telling you, “You can do it!” I’ll be that person for you! 🙂
The Sis and I spoke for some time last night as she took a few online tests to try to make a determination of which career path would suit her best. I love screenwriting and want her to do something she loves too, no matter how long it takes to achieve it. Unfortunately, my creative path practically ensures that I will work in jobs with little satisfaction (because creatives often want to save their energy for their real job) until I “make it”, while her career paths require many years of schooling, but will then reap huge rewards in the end. We each must choose what makes us happy and have the courage to follow it.
Set goals and dreams for yourself that people find amusing and then push those people aside as you go on to achieve your goals. The naysaying should be fuel for your tenacity to show them all! Wave to them from the top, and hope that they find something to be passionate about, because that’s probably the main reason they have chosen to try to knock you down.
So here’s to your continuing success! Best of luck!
Fun Fact Friday
I found this interesting infographic in regards to how writing helps the brain and thought I’d share with my fellow creatives.
I found the graphic here if you feel like scouring their site for other interesting tidbits, like “How to be more productive” which would probably be more easily accomplished by not playing on the internet… 🙂
Happy Friday, friends!
Writing Prompt #44
It’s Writing Prompt Wednesday!
I started the prompts as a way to help other writers find inspiration, but I have found I enjoy the escape they provide as well. I’ve written 20 flash fiction pieces so far, and truly hope you find them useful as well as interesting.
This week’s prompt could be seen in a number of ways, and I look forward to seeing what you create!
Writing Prompt Challenge Accepted #10
I kept the promise I made to myself and wrote a couple of flash fiction pieces. I used them as a warm-up exercise as I pushed past that third act hurdle I have been struggling with…
The Sis made note that I always set up the story without any follow through; she wants to know more, which I appreciate. I suppose I could work on that, but I write about what the image entails, and with 200 words (or less) it’s hard to get into the story much beyond that. I hope you enjoy anyway. 🙂
Lost
The cavern smelled of death and rot, of days long since passed. Her nose twitched and she winced in response. A cool breeze wafted through swirling her hair about her and with it came expectation. The months of visions had all led her to this moment, and she could feel the vindication welling in her chest. There was light illuminating the cave before her, and she stood up at the bow of the small rowboat eager to see what would reveal itself beyond. She knew it was there.
The few sailors she had aligned herself with rowed a bit faster and she held the lantern up a bit higher. The edge of the cave was like an open mouth; jagged rocks reached upward and hung menacingly from above. She held her breath as her eyes adjusted to the light and then she gasped. There she was. The prized Jewel. She had long been lost, but no longer.
I couldn’t remember how we had arrived in this place. I was upon my back, everything ached, and as I looked around I found my companions in similar positions upon the ground around me. Nothing was as it should be; the sky was yellow, the trees beheld faces, and the air smelled of ash. I winced with each movement as I rose to my feet. That was when I was able to take in our surroundings more fully.
There was a tower of sorts that held a world within it; starry sky, a sea of clouds, and a beautiful sunrise in the distance. It clearly held a more sinister purpose as I noticed the trail of blood leading inward from the stairs. The tower was taller than any structure I had ever encountered before, and it appeared as if there were people on the ramparts above. I had the distinct uneasy feeling that they were watching us. Along with the doorway cut into the sky itself on one side and a castle alight with an inferno on the other, my mind reeled. I drew my sword and took an unsteady step forward.

Writing Prompt #43
As many of you know by now, I love history and lost worlds, and when I found this image, of course I was immediately intrigued. A little Goonies reference perhaps? I fully intend to write a couple flash fictions this week based on the images I’ve posted recently, so remember to share what you create as well! I look forward to seeing your imaginations at work!
Happy Writing!
